The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy, and Development (FENRAD) has raised urgent concerns over the deepening economic crisis in the Southeast, caused by the persistent sit-at-home orders. The orders, initially imposed by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a form of protest against the detention of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, have snowballed into a region-wide economic disaster.
FENRAD, in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, highlighted the devastating impact of the ongoing shutdowns, which have crippled commerce, stifled economic growth, and worsened poverty across the Southeast.
The Economic Fallout
For over two years, the Southeast, once renowned for its vibrant entrepreneurial spirit, has been paralyzed by the Monday sit-at-home orders. Urban and commercial centers like Onitsha, Aba, Nnewi, and Enugu have borne the brunt of the unrest, as businesses, markets, and schools are forced to shut down weekly. FENRAD points to alarming statistics indicating billions of naira in weekly losses, job cuts, and a sharp rise in poverty levels as businesses collapse under the strain.
“Many families across the Southeast depend on daily earnings for survival,” the statement noted, “and the continuous disruption of business activities is plunging many into destitution, particularly vulnerable groups like women and children.”
The Foundation further noted that the educational sector is in disarray, with schools closing on sit-at-home days. This interruption, FENRAD stressed, not only disrupts learning but threatens the future potential of the region’s youth. Moreover, the economic uncertainty has scared off both local and foreign investors, leading to a withdrawal of funds and opportunities, which could take years to recover.

The Call for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
FENRAD reiterated that the root cause of the economic turmoil is tied to the detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Despite several court orders mandating his release, the Nigerian government has continued to detain him, fueling further unrest. According to the Foundation, his release is a crucial step toward de-escalating tensions and restoring normalcy in the Southeast.
“We call on the Federal Government to respect court rulings and release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally,” Comrade Nwafor stated. “This act would not only calm the situation but also pave the way for constructive dialogue aimed at addressing the underlying issues.”
Urgent Action Needed
FENRAD’s statement also urged the government to introduce immediate economic relief measures for businesses and individuals affected by the shutdowns. The Foundation suggested providing financial aid to small and medium-sized businesses, as well as implementing social welfare programs to mitigate the effects of the ongoing economic paralysis.
Additionally, FENRAD called for inclusive dialogue between the government, IPOB, traditional rulers, and civil society groups to work out a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
Conclusion
The Foundation concluded its statement with a strong appeal to all stakeholders to act swiftly, warning that the Southeast’s economic future is at stake. “The region cannot afford to continue on this path of destruction. The release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and a commitment to justice, dialogue, and reconciliation are the only viable paths toward peace and prosperity.”
