In a bold move to combat unemployment and foster economic growth, Senator Austin Akobundu, representing Abia Central Senatorial District, has embarked on the inspection of ongoing skills acquisition centres across the district. The initiative, aimed at equipping youth with practical skills, underscores his commitment to transforming constituents from job seekers into job creators.
During his visit to the Ikwuano Local Government Area, Senator Akobundu expressed satisfaction with the progress of the centre, which has advanced to the lintel stage. Roofing work is expected to begin within three weeks, signaling the project’s steady march towards completion. Similarly, the Isiala Ngwa North Centre, earlier flagged off with fanfare, is also at the lintel stage. Hon. Collins Ugochukwu Iheonunekwu, who represented the Senator during an inspection, reaffirmed the commitment to delivering the projects promptly, describing them as “life-changing for the youth of Abia Central.”
Efforts are also underway to replicate these centres in other local government areas within the senatorial district. Land acquisition processes are nearing completion, with construction scheduled to begin in earnest after the festive season. The centres will provide vocational training and certification programs in various trades, equipping beneficiaries with globally competitive skills.

Local leaders and residents have lauded the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention to address youth unemployment and social vices. Elder Amaobi Chinyere, a community elder, noted, “These centres will go a long way in reducing idleness among our youth, making them productive members of society.”
Senator Akobundu, reflecting on the broader vision of the initiative, stated, “This is not just about constructing buildings; it’s about building lives and creating opportunities. My commitment is to leave a legacy of sustainable development across Abia Central.”
The skills acquisition centres were among the flagship projects flagged off by Senator Akobundu in November 2024, marking his first year in office. This ongoing effort has cemented his reputation as a leader deeply invested in the welfare and empowerment of his constituents.
With several impactful projects underway, Senator Akobundu continues to demonstrate his resolve to uplift Abia Central, laying a solid foundation for a more prosperous and self-reliant community.
