…Calls for Urgent Reforms
Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the reported death of several children who were trampled during a Christmas celebration in Ibadan, Oyo State. The incident, which occurred during what should have been a joyous occasion, has drawn attention to systemic failures in event management and the broader socio-economic challenges facing Nigeria.
In a statement on social media, Obi described the tragedy as “heart-wrenching” and a stark reminder of the inequalities and desperation plaguing the country. He lamented that children, who symbolize hope and the future, lost their lives in a scramble for basic Christmas gifts, a situation he attributes to pervasive poverty and neglect.
“How did we, as a people, reach a point where children lose their lives in the pursuit of something as simple as Christmas gifts?” Obi queried, emphasizing that the incident underscores the urgent need for reforms to address poverty, inequality, and resource accessibility.

He also criticized the lack of adequate event planning and crowd control measures, which contributed to the calamity. Obi called for a renewed commitment from leaders at all levels to prioritize the safety and well-being of vulnerable groups, particularly children.
“This tragedy calls for deep reflection and decisive action from leaders at all levels,” Obi said. “The measure of a nation’s greatness lies in its care for the vulnerable, and this moment should inspire us to create a safer, more inclusive Nigeria.”
The former Anambra State governor urged policymakers to implement solutions that ensure equitable resource distribution and enforce strict safety standards for public events. He expressed hope that the deaths of these children would inspire lasting change in the country’s approach to governance and social welfare.
As Nigerians mourn the loss of these young lives, Obi’s statement serves as a call to action to prevent such tragedies in the future and build a nation that prioritizes the dignity and safety of all its citizens.
