The Anambra State Government in a prompt action on a stampede incident, at Okija, Ihiala LGA of the State that took many lives during the sharing of yuletide rice has initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede.
Information available to South East Reporters has it that the government said it will work closely with relevant agencies to determine the root causes of this unfortunate event and ensure that any negligence or lapses in safety protocols are duly addressed.
In his expression of sympathy, Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, extends his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, especially the women, the elderly, pregnant, nursing mothers and children who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident.
The government however said that information available to it has it that the Obi Jackson Foundation, led by Chief Ernest Obiejesi, had organised the event with the noble intention of sharing relief materials with less privileged members of the community during this festive season.
The Government said that despite that good intentions, the resulting tragedy underscores the urgent need for a more structured and safer approach to distributing such assistance to avoid such occurrences.
As a result, Anambra State Government has implored all well-meaning individuals and organisations engaged in charitable activities to prioritise the safety and well-being of beneficiaries.
Christian Aburime, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Soludo said that it is strongly advised that future distributions of relief materials be conducted in a more organised and decentralised manner, with adequate crowd control measures in place.
According to him, this may include establishing multiple distribution points within the community to reduce overcrowding at a single location; implementing a system to prioritise vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, children and people with disabilities; employing trained personnel to manage crowds, ensure orderly queues, and provide assistance to those in need; and conducting public awareness campaigns to educate the public on safety protocols during such events.
Meanwhile, following the tragedy, the Obi Jackson Foundation has cancelled the 2024
Christmas celebration for the Okija children, in the spirit of mourning and respect for the dead.
“Due to the heartbreaking events earlier yesterday surrounding the recent rice-sharing tragedy, the Obijackson Foundation has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Christmas celebration for the Okija children.
“Our thoughts are with those affected, and we believe it’s vital to prioritize healing and support for the community at this time. We look forward to continuing our work for the well-being of Okija in the new year.”
