Nigerian Army Urges Responsible Social Media Use for National Security

Major General Hassan Dada, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, has emphasized the role of social media users in maintaining national security. He urged media practitioners to be vigilant and avoid spreading fake news and negative content that could incite violence.

Speaking at the 33rd Edition of the Nigerian Army Social Media Seminar in Aba, themed “Enhancing National Security Through The Responsible Use Of Social Media,” Maj. Gen Dada described the seminar as timely and aimed at ensuring national security. He highlighted the importance of responsible social media use in creating a safe and secure society.

The GOC expressed concern over the misuse of social media platforms, stating that the dissemination of injurious contents can have devastating impacts on society. He emphasized the need for a deeper understanding of how uncontrolled dissemination of messages on social media can endanger peaceful coexistence.

Maj. Gen Dada solicited the support of the people, stating that the Nigerian Army cannot achieve its constitutional responsibility without the cooperation of citizens. He assured the public of the Army’s resilience in collaboration with other security agencies to exterminate any threat to peace in Abia state and other states in the South East Region.

The Chief of Civil Military Affairs, Maj Gen. Nosa Ugbo, acknowledged the crucial role of social media in shaping public opinion. He emphasized the seminar as a platform for engagement and collaboration between the Nigerian Army and stakeholders.

Brigadier General Bola Keji, representing Maj. Gen Ugbo, stressed the importance of responsible social media use in fostering peace and national unity.

The seminar, attended by social media influencers, bloggers, media practitioners, and the general public, featured paper presentations on curbing negative content and the effects of fake news on national security. The overall goal is to combat the harmful influence of hate speeches, fake news, and divisive content propagated through social media.
