A former Abia State Deputy Governorship candidate under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Hon. Obinna Ichita, has expressed deep concern over what he described as the systematic neglect of Abia South Senatorial District in the allocation and execution of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) projects.
Ichita, who also previously represented Aba South State Constituency in the Abia House of Assembly, made the allegation following revelations by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during a Channels TV interview. Wike had disclosed that a private individual received ₦4 billion monthly from the NDDC over a 12-month period—an amount Ichita described as alarming.
“Abia South is the region where oil and gas are located in the state, and it is the reason Abia qualifies as an NDDC state,” Ichita said in a statement. “Yet, it appears that we are excluded from the projects meant for oil-producing communities.”

He questioned the identity of contractors handling NDDC projects in the area and lamented that, unlike other Niger Delta states, there is no visible NDDC road project in Aba or elsewhere in Abia South in recent years—despite consistent budgetary allocations.
“The framework of senatorial zone intervention provides ₦2 billion per annum for each zone, yet Abia South gets little or nothing. How is it that the region that produces the resources sees no project, while other areas benefit?” he queried.
Ichita also raised concerns over the role of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who has represented Abia South in the Senate for over 16 years. Without making a direct accusation, Ichita hinted at possible complicity or dereliction of duty, asking whether the pattern of exclusion is “a coincidence or a planned oppression.”
As of press time, Senator Abaribe has not publicly responded to the allegations.
