The traditional tranquility of Okon Aku in Ohafia Local Government Area has been shattered by a volatile kingship dispute that has now escalated into a high-stakes political scandal. At the center of the storm is the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Rt. Hon. Ikechukwu Emetu, who faces grave allegations of abusing executive power to subvert ancestral traditions.
The crisis, which reached a fever pitch in the first week of 2026, has left one man dead, several political figures behind bars, and a community questioning the “New Abia” mantra of the Governor Alex Otti administration.
A Tradition Under Siege
For generations, the kingship of Okon Aku has followed a strictly defined rotation among designated ruling lineages. However, community leaders allege that this order was systematically undermined following the 2023/2024 political transition.
The spark for the current unrest is the reported attempt to install a monarch from a lineage outside the recognized ruling houses. This candidate is allegedly a close personal associate of Deputy Governor Emetu, with sources pointing to their collaboration during recent public fuel distribution exercises as evidence of a “political reward” system at play.
“Ancestral traditions must not be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency,” one community source told Abia Vanguard. “What we are seeing is an attempt to rewrite our history with the ink of state power.”
Tragedy on the Eve of a Wedding
The dispute took a dark and bloody turn on Friday, January 2, 2026. Hon. Igwe Akuma, a young man and active community member, was brutally attacked and killed during a clash involving what witnesses described as “hired thugs” sponsored by influential political actors.
The tragedy is deepened by a harrowing detail: Akuma was scheduled to be married just four days later, on January 6. Instead of a wedding feast, his family is now preparing for a funeral, and the community is demanding to know who authorized the violence that claimed his life.
“Orders from Above”: Detentions and Human Rights Concerns
In the wake of the violence, the state’s response has drawn sharp criticism from human rights observers. Rather than de-escalating the situation, security forces have reportedly engaged in a wave of “selective arrests.”
Currently, several high-profile figures—mostly affiliated with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—are being held at the SCID Police Headquarters in Umuahia. Among those detained for over 96 hours without arraignment are:
- Hon. Ekea Udensi: Former Ohafia LG Chairman and former ASUBEB Commissioner.
- Madam Grace Udensi Kalu.
- Mr. Nmecha Udensi.
- Mr. Nnana Oformba.
Reliable reports suggest these individuals are being held on “orders from above,” with alarming allegations surfacing that the Deputy Governor personally seized the detainees’ mobile phones and refused to hand them over to police investigators—a move legal experts call a flagrant violation of constitutional rights.
Is Governor Otti in the Dark?
The escalating crisis has placed Governor Alex Otti in a difficult position. Known for his public stance on justice and the rule of law, the Governor now faces questions about whether his deputy’s actions are being carried out with his knowledge or under his radar.
The Abia Vanguard, in a signed statement by Chukwuma Trust, issued a direct appeal to the Governor to intervene before the situation permanently stains his administration’s legacy.
The Demands for Peace
To prevent a total breakdown of law and order in Ohafia, stakeholders have laid out three non-negotiable demands:
- Independent Probe: A transparent investigation into the killing of Hon. Igwe Akuma to bring the perpetrators and their sponsors to justice.
- Accountability: A public apology from Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu to the Udensi family for the alleged unlawful detentions and maltreatment.
- Executive Restraint: Immediate intervention by Governor Otti to restrain his deputy and protect the sanctity of Ohafia’s traditional institutions.
As of press time, the Deputy Governor’s office has not released an official statement regarding these specific allegations. However, the eyes of the state are now on Umuahia, waiting to see if justice will prevail over political ambition.
