Many were feared dead as a speeding tipper loaded with sand crashed into a crowd along the Chisco Park Junction in Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed in the crash which occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Friday night.
According to videos trending online from the scene and CCTV footage capturing the incident, people were engaged in their usual nighttime activities when the tipper lost control and rammed into them.
Many were knocked down, including motorcyclists, a young girl, bystanders, and several petty traders.
The footage shows some of the victims lying on the ground, while residents and other road users express shock and offer rescue assistance.
Efforts to confirm the crash with the State Corps Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, Nnennaya Alexander, were unsuccessful, as she had yet to respond to several calls.
However, the spokesperson for the command, Margaret Onabe, assured full information, but had yet to do so at the time of publication.
