In a bold move aimed at advocating for the rights of Nigerian citizens, Hon. Obi Aguocha-MHR, representing Ikwuano Umuahia Federal Constituency, has issued a compelling online media release concerning the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Released on Friday, April 12, 2024, at 2100Hrs, the media release titled “Re: Nnamdi Kanu, Sawore, Igboho, and Emefiele” addresses the legal status of individuals accused by the government of various alleged offences.
Aguocha highlights the judiciary’s role in upholding the rights of citizens, citing the cases of Omoyele Sawore and Sunday Igboho, who have been granted freedom due to judicial determinations in defense of their rights.
Similarly, the media release acknowledges the judiciary’s decision to grant bail to Mr. Emefiele, with the issuance of a N50M bail bond, underscoring the importance of respecting constitutional rights.
However, Aguocha raises pertinent questions regarding Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention, emphasizing his status as a citizen and his constitutional right to be granted bail. The release questions whether there is a disparity in the treatment of citizens from different regions, particularly those from the South East zone.
In a direct appeal to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, HE Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, Aguocha urges him to utilize his influential position to ensure the unconditional and immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu. The appeal is framed as a gesture of goodwill towards supporting the peaceful development of the South East region and the welfare of Igbo people.
