The Government of Imo State on Friday, announced that it has a zero tolerance policy on child labour, child abuse and domestic servitude.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Lady Nkechinyere, yesterday in Owerri, issued a strong condemnation of child labour, domestic servitude, and abuse of children by step-parents.
While calling for immediate action and a zero-tolerance approach, Ugwu emphasized the alarming number of cases being handled by the ministry, urging parents and guardians to prioritize their children’s well-being.
Ugwu said that her strong stance and call for action against the above offense underscore the state’s commitment to safeguarding children and promoting their well-being.
She said that it is the duty of all Imolites to join hands in reporting any suspected cases of child labour, abuse, or exploitation to the authorities for immediate intervention
Ugwu while highlighting the detrimental impact of sending children to work as domestic help, depriving them of education and basic rights, stressed that no matter how difficult things are, it is better to keep your child at home.
She condemned the mistreatment of children by step-parents, vowing to prosecute offenders to the fullest extent of the law.
Ugwu warned that Imo State Government will not normalize evil, and urged the members of the public to report any instances of abuse.
On persistent child hawking during school hours, Ugwu announced her ministry’s plans to establish a dedicated court to swiftly address such cases.
She said that the court will serve as a powerful tool to combat child labour and ensure the protection of vulnerable children.
The Commissioner expressed her gratitude to Governor Hope Uzodinma for his unwavering support and funding, enabling the ministry to reach out to vulnerable individuals.
She extended the same commendation to the First Lady, Barrister Chioma Uzodimma, for her constant encouragement and support, pledging to continue implementing state government programs and policies in the communities.
