There is a heavy concern that over hundred persons have been hospitalized in Abiriba, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, after receiving drugs from a group that came for free medical outreach.
Meanwhile, the government of Abia State has reacted through the state Ministry of health stressing that those conducting the medical outreach did not seek or obtain approval from the Abia State Ministry of Health.
As gathered, a serious emergency has unfolded as many individuals have being taken to Ebube Ena Hospital after consuming drugs that were distributed earlier on Saturday.
South East Reporters gathered that a group of people distributed free drugs at Erinma Hall, Abiriba and more than 100 people have been hospitalized as a result of the drugs taken.
Prof Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, Commissioner for Health Abia State said the attention of his has been drawn to unauthorized delivery of healthcare services and distribution of drugs to the public by uncertified persons under the guise of free medical mission in Abiriba, Ohafia Local Government Area.
Uche said that preliminary reports indicate that medications distributed during this outreach may have caused adverse drug reactions among unsuspecting recipients.
He said that identified victims of these untoward medical events are currently receiving medical attention at designated public health facilities within the state.
Uche said that the state’s dedicated healthcare personnel are working assiduously to stabilize and treat affected people.
“The Abia State Ministry of Health is deeply concerned by the dire consequences and high risk posed by unauthorized healthcare activities.
“We wish to hereby warn the public to be cautious of individuals and groups organizing unapproved healthcare events.
“The Ministry of Health wishes to announce that medical missions without authorization from the office of the Commissioner for Health Abia State are unlawful and those who conduct such illegal activities that put the Health of Abia citizens and residents in jeopardy shall be made to face the full wrath of the law.
“The State Government prioritizes the healthcare and safety of Abians.
Public spirited individuals, philanthropists and intending sponsors of healthcare wallets and free health services in Abia State who wish to partner with the state are hereby encouraged to approach and obtain approval through written permission from the office of the Commissioner, Abia State Ministry of Health before conducting such services.
“This is to ensure that such activities meet established safety standards and protocols that safeguard and promote the health of our citizens.
“All intended medical missions without official approval from the Ministry of Health are hereby declared illegal and prohibited by the Government of Abia State.
