FENRAD Hails Supreme Court Ruling on LGA Funds as Victory for Grassroots Governance and Accountability

The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy, and Development (FENRAD) has welcomed the landmark decision by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, barring state governors from controlling and spending Local Government Area (LGA) funds.

The ruling, according to FENRAD, marks a significant milestone in the quest for enhanced transparency, accountability, and autonomy in local governance in Nigeria.

For years, the misappropriation and diversion of LGA funds by state governors have hindered grassroots development, depriving local councils of necessary financial resources to execute developmental projects and provide essential services.

FENRAD believes the proper administration and utilization of LGA funds will have far-reaching positive impacts, including improved infrastructure, enhanced social services, and community-driven projects.

The organization has called on state governors to comply fully with the Supreme Court’s decision and ensure the immediate release and appropriate utilization of LGA funds.

FENRAD has also urged the federal government and relevant oversight bodies to enforce the ruling rigorously and monitor its implementation closely.

The Supreme Court’s ruling sets a precedent for good governance and accountability across all levels of government, promoting a culture of integrity and responsibility among public officials.

FENRAD remains committed to advocating for policies that promote good governance, transparency, and sustainable development, and will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the benefits of this landmark decision are fully realized.

The ruling is a victory for the rule of law and a triumph for millions of Nigerians who rely on local governments for essential services and development, marking a crucial step towards building a more equitable, accountable, and prosperous Nigeria.
