The Anambra State Police Command has reopened investigation into the alleged brutalization and death of the former President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ONICCIMA), Mr Okechukwu Akaneme by operatives of the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA), and its personnel involvement.

The incident, which reportedly occurred on Oct. 11, 2024 during the ASWAMA enforcement operation accompanied by the police, is believed to have led to Akaneme’s death.

SP Ikenga Tochukwu, spokesman of the state police command in a statement on Saturday confirmed that preliminary findings revealed significant lapses in the conduct of its personnel involved in the operation.

The individuals allegedly acted outside the standard operating procedures required of law enforcement and affiliated agencies.

According to him, Akaneme sustained severe spinal injuries during the ASWAMA-led operation on October 11, 2024, injuries from which he never fully recovered, ultimately leading to his death on July 10, 2025.

“Given the unfortunate demise of Mr. Akaneme, the Anambra State Police Command considers this matter reopened.

“The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, has been directed to immediately review the case file and launch a thorough investigation into the events of October 11, 2024, as well as any subsequent actions or inactions by individuals or agencies involved,” it stated.

The command also acknowledged a growing public outcry and the circulation of a “disturbing narrative” on social media and other platforms regarding the circumstances of Akaneme’s death.

“The late businessman, a well-respected figure in Anambra’s commercial sector, was said to have been subjected to forceful treatment during the operation, allegedly in the presence of armed police officers,” it added.

The police confirmed that an internal inquiry had been previously conducted following the initial incident. At that time, findings suggested that certain individuals had deviated from lawful and professional conduct.

However, the police now affirm that Akaneme’s death warrants a renewed and comprehensive investigation.

“The Command extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and professional associates of Mr Okechukwu Akaneme. We acknowledge his impactful contributions to the economic development of Anambra State,” it noted.

Reiterating the police force’s commitment to justice and accountability, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, assured the public that no officer of the Nigeria Police Force is above the law.

“Any personnel found to have acted unprofessionally or unlawfully will face appropriate disciplinary and legal measures. We are also working closely with relevant state agencies to ensure full cooperation and transparency in uncovering the truth behind this case,” he said.

The Command reaffirmed its dedication to upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and delivering justice without fear or favor.
