Enugu Secures Hosting Rights for 2026 National Sports Festival in Landmark Agreement with Federal Government

In a significant step for Nigerian sports, the Federal Government and the Enugu State Government have formalized a Host State Agreement for the 2026 National Sports Festival. The signing ceremony, held at the Enugu Government House, officially awarded the South-East state the hosting rights for the prestigious event.

The agreement was signed by Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission, on behalf of the Federal Government, and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah. This development cements Enugu’s place as the epicenter of Nigerian sports for the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival.

During the ceremony, Governor Mbah expressed gratitude to the National Sports Commission and other stakeholders for entrusting Enugu with the responsibility of hosting the festival. He assured attendees that the state is committed to delivering a world-class event that will leave a lasting legacy.

“We deeply appreciate this opportunity to showcase Enugu as a beacon of excellence,” Governor Mbah stated. “We are determined to create an unforgettable experience for athletes, sports enthusiasts, and visitors. Our preparations began the moment we were announced as the host state, and we have set ambitious goals to raise the standard of the National Sports Festival.”

Governor Mbah revealed comprehensive plans to revamp the Awgu Games Village, renovate existing sports infrastructure, and construct additional facilities. “We are delivering a brand-new Games Village and ensuring our stadiums are modernized to global standards. By the end of this year, we are confident Enugu will be ready to host an event that rivals any international sporting occasion,” he added.

Hon. Bukola Olopade praised Enugu’s commitment and the state’s improved security environment, noting that these factors were crucial in awarding the hosting rights. “Governor Mbah’s vision and the state’s available facilities assured us of Enugu’s readiness to host the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival. This festival will not only promote sports but also serve as a catalyst for tourism and investment in the region,” he said.

The 2026 National Sports Festival is expected to bring thousands of athletes and visitors to Enugu, creating opportunities for economic growth and cultural exchange. With Enugu’s preparations already underway, stakeholders and sports enthusiasts across Nigeria are looking forward to an event that promises to set new benchmarks for the festival.
