Deputy Speaker ‘s call on Gov Otti to join APC garners support

By John Obasi

The recent call by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, on Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) has received widespread support from stakeholders and members of Benjamin Kalu Movement (BKM), a non-profit, and non-partisan organization in Abia State.

The Deputy Speaker made the call in viral video circulated on various social media platforms on Monday, the 19th August, 2024, citing the governor’s impressive performance and the need for him to align with the progressive ideals of the APC and renewed hope agenda of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Many have hailed the call as timely and wise, arguing that Governor Otti’s defection to the APC would bring immense benefits to the state, including increased federal patronage and access to more resources.

However, Hon. Obi Aguocha and some critics have attempted to politicize the call, accusing the Deputy Speaker of meddling in state affairs. But the State Chairman of Benjamin Kalu Movement (BKM), Dr. Ogwo, Okechukwu Kalu has warned Aguocha and other critics of the call to desist from making unnecessary issues out of a well-intentioned suggestion.

According to the Chairman, “We should focus on moving Abia State forward, rather than playing petty politics, if joining the APC would bring more development to our state, then we should embrace it.”

As the political landscape in Abia State continues to evolve, one thing is clear: the Deputy Speaker’s call has set off a chain reaction of political maneuvering that could shape the future of the state.

Hon. Obi Aguocha should concentrate on his mandate as a representative of Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency at the house of representatives, attract the needed dividends of democracy to his constituents, instead of reducing his office to that of a Public Relations Officer to the Governor of Abia State.
