Alloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has clarified recent media reports. Contrary to some outlets’ claims, Kanu did not set any conditions for his trial during the hearing on 17th April 2024.
Ejimakor emphasized that the main focus of the court session was their application to reinstate Kanu’s bail, following the Supreme Court’s ruling on 15th December 2023. The Supreme Court had determined that Kanu’s bail was erroneously revoked due to a misunderstanding that he had absconded, which the court found to be untrue.
Ejimakor quoted part of the Supreme Court’s judgment, stating that Kanu was on bail and within the custody of the law when his residence was unlawfully invaded, forcing him to flee the country for his safety. The court noted that under such circumstances, fleeing to preserve one’s life is a responsible action.

“It is glaring from the record of the proceedings in the trial court that it granted the said orders prayed for by the appellant with knowledge of the fact that the respondent’s absence from court was caused by the invasion of his home by army officers of the appellant,” Ejimakor reiterated, emphasizing the unjust treatment Kanu had received.
Ejimakor further explained that it was unjust to accuse Kanu of jumping bail when the authorities’ actions had made it impossible for him to attend court proceedings. The court had granted orders based on false information provided by the prosecution, leading to the revocation of Kanu’s bail and the forfeiture of his sureties’ bail bonds.
Ejimakor’s statement aims to correct the narrative surrounding Kanu’s trial and to clarify the actual events of the court hearing on 17th April 2024.
