In a bold move, the State Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Abia State Council, has unanimously rejected the recent directive from the Office of the Head of Service. The directive, which called for Abia State workers to undergo another round of verification, was met with strong opposition during an emergency meeting held on May 11, 2024.
The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Abia State stands firmly with the NLC, declaring their refusal to participate in what they consider an “anti-workers” verification process. The union regards the directive as not only provocative but also as a direct challenge to the dignity of Abia State’s workers, potentially disrupting the industrial peace and harmony that the state currently enjoys.
In response to the directive, NULGE has issued a call to action for all Local Government workers in Abia State to boycott the verification exercise. Branch Chairmen have been instructed to hold emergency Congress meetings and ensure that members are informed about the decision. Furthermore, workers have been advised against uploading any information related to the verification on the internet.

The NLC’s stance is clear: solidarity is paramount, and the workers’ rights must be protected. As the situation develops, further directives are expected to be issued from the State Secretariat.
Comrade Ike Abugu, the State Secretary, signed off the announcement with a resounding “Solidarity forever,” echoing the collective resolve of the labor unions in Abia State.
