… Abia Speaker Empowers 164 constituents with ₦100,000 cash grants each.
The Abia State House of Assembly has reassured the public that its recent legislative actions, including the establishment of an agency to oversee state development, do not conflict with the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy.
Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, who represents the Aba South State Constituency, provided this assurance during an empowerment program held for his constituents in Aba.
Speaking at the event, Emeruwa emphasized the importance of accountability in local government administration. He explained that the Assembly’s move to establish a supervisory framework was aimed at ensuring equitable development across rural and grassroots communities. According to him, proper oversight is essential to prevent the misuse of local government funds and to guarantee that development reaches the people.
“While the Supreme Court’s judgment on local government autonomy is clear, our role as a legislature includes ensuring accountability. Without lawful supervision, elected local government officials may abuse public funds, thereby hindering progress at the grassroots level,” Emeruwa stated.

He revealed that the proposed bill would penalize school proprietors who insist on the purchase of new textbooks, advocating instead for the reuse of older textbooks by younger siblings.
